Optimising our water usage and wastewater treatment

The production of beverages is a water-intensive industry. Olvi seeks to reduce its water consumption per litre produced. In 2022, our water consumption was 2.3 litres per produced litre, which was same amount as in 2021.

The water used by Olvi is high-quality groundwater originating from a pristine forest area. The area is protected and located away from external pollution. The area’s ecosystem is protected, and the water is used in sustainable manner. We optimise our water consumption by paying attention to washing, planning of it, detergents and technical equipment solutions. We will increase water recycling in the future.

Wastewater is generated during the various phases of the production process, particularly in connection with washing the production facilities and equipment to ensure a high level of quality and hygiene in production processes. Wastewater is routed to the process of the local municipal wastewater treatment plant trough an equalising tank that reduces the biological oxygen-consuming load and the use of biofilter.

In cooperation with municipal wastewater plant, we have improved the efficiency of pre-treatment to improve water quality. In 2019, we invested 2.3 million euros in the renovation of wastewater treatment plant. We have also improved chemical management in the production process by minimizing losses and optimizing detergent consumption, among others.

Olvi engages in large-scale cooperation with other operators in the industrial sector for cleaner water.
