Sustainable water use

Water is the most important raw material for the beverage industry, and large amounts of it are used in production. Olvi aims to improve its water efficiency and reduce water withdrawals per litre produced in order to reduce the impact on local water resources. Olvi’s production plants are not located in high water-risk areas. In 2025, Olvi used 2.30 litres of water per litre of finished product, which is clearly below the good practice recommendation of 4.0 litres, and we aim to reduce use further.

Optimising water use

We optimise our water use by paying attention to washing and production planning, detergents and technical equipment solutions. By developing washing solutions, we can also affect the amount of wastewater and the chemical and nutrient load in discharges. We are also continuously seeking and developing solutions to increase water recycling and reuse within the plant or process without compromising high hygiene standards.

Wastewater from our production process is treated at the municipal wastewater plant. In cooperation with wastewater treatment plant, we have developed efficient wastewater pre-treatment to improve water quality. This prevents nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as other substances that burden the environment, from entering the wastewater.

Working for a more sustainable value chain

Olvi’s production is dependent on clean water and agricultural raw materials. What happens in our value chain, on the other hand, have an impact on the aquatic environment, biodiversity and climate change. We aim to reduce these impacts in cooperation with our suppliers, for example, by means of sustainable water use, material and energy solutions, and regenerative farming methods that support soil health and biodiversity. We commit our partners to minimising water use and wastewater load and managing adverse impacts, especially in water-stress areas,  in our partners’ Code of Conduct.

We are taking steps to improve environmental practices in our value chain, focusing on water use, material and energy solutions, and cooperation especially with raw and packaging material suppliers. Progress is ongoing and reported annually.
