Reducing our carbon footprint

Olvi aims to mitigate climate change both in its own operations and in the value chain. The majority of climate emissions arise in the value chain. In accordance with the transition plan for climate change mitigation, material development and packaging redesign, product portfolio development, and reducing emissions from transportation are the most important tools for reducing value chain emissions. Emissions from our own production are reduced through the use of renewable electricity and renewable energy sources, as well as by improving energy efficiency.

Own operations

Direct greenhouse gas emissions from our own operations mainly arise from the production of heat, steam and electricity used at production plants. Olvi produces heat with renewable energy sources, such as side streams from a nearby sawmill, and uses renewable electricity, so emissions are very low. Energy efficiency is continuously improved, for example through the renewed brewhouse, energy recovery systems in high-bay warehouses and heat recovery at the plant.

Value chain

Already around 95% of Olvi Group’s climate emissions arise in the value chain. Four-fifths of value chain emissions come from purchased materials and services. The next most significant emission sources are outbound and inbound transportation.

We can best reduce emissions from purchased materials through development work carried out together with value chain partners. Material-related climate emissions are reduced by lightening packaging, increasing the use of recycled materials, reusing materials, reducing waste and developing the product portfolio. For example, recycled material already accounts for more than 30% of plastic bottles and approximately one quarter of all packaging materials. Most transport packaging, such as pallets and trays, is reusable, which significantly reduces material use.

Transport emissions are reduced through daily work, such as transport planning, and by increasing the use of renewable fuel. We started a biofuel pilot in 2023 and have further expanded the use of HVO fuel. In addition to renewable fuel, a few electric and biogas vehicles are also in use. According to the manufacturer’s information, biofuels reduce transport emissions by approximately 80–90%.

We Operate with High Standards

In addition to improving our operations, we are developing our emissions reporting so that we can better identify impacts arising from different production stages and other activities. We report environmental impacts in more detail in the sustainability statement. In CDP reporting, we achieved an excellent A- score in 2025. We also participate in the EcoVadis sustainability assessment, where our sustainability work received a Gold rating (top 5% of responding companies). In addition, in 2024 and 2025, Olvi was recognised by Time magazine by being included in the global list of 500 sustainably growing companies.

To ensure the effectiveness of our emission reduction work, we have approved science-based climate targets (Science Based Targets, SBT). We regularly update the transition plan that guides this work and report on the progress and actions of our emission reduction work in the sustainability statement.
